The first home game of the year for the Saints ended in a 10.11 (71) to 24.14 (158) loss, with the Bears romping to their second straight win to start the season at the expense of the home side.
Benalla came out with intensity, putting through the first major of the day, however, Shepparton soon found its groove, slotting the next five majors for the term to assume control with a 33-9 lead at quarter-time.
The Bears proved a class above a young Saints side as the contest wore on, extending the lead at every break, however, Benalla fought hard, showing glimpses of the potential it holds and gaining ascendency in patches throughout.
Having kicked one goal in the opening term, the Saints improved their output in each of the following terms, culminating in a 4.5 (29) fourth quarter, matching the Bears for scoring shots while giving maximum effort until the final siren, with 10 goals a respectable return given where Benalla is at in comparison to premiership contender Shepparton.
Nathan Wright could prove to be the recruit of the season across the league, slotting four majors for the second straight week despite the scoreline, a feat which means he sits second on the goal-kicking tally through two rounds, behind only Shepparton’s Lewis McShane, who booted six at the weekend.
Nick Mellington impressed with 31 disposals and two goals as Benalla’s best player, joined by the ever-reliable Chris Welsh (25 disposals, nine clearances), while Mark Marriott continued his brilliant form in the ruck, earning 162 ranking points in a duel against reigning Morrison medallist Ash Holland, the most of anyone on the ground.
Cooper Gracie was also named among the more influential players in his second senior game for the club, an exciting taste of what’s to come from the youth brigade, while Nick Warnock was also solid, tallying six intercept possessions.
Jordan Wolff slotted two majors alongside 21 touches in an impressive display, while Tyler McGregor and Tom Riley rounded out the goal-kickers with one each.
The Saints face another tough test on Good Friday, travelling to Kyabram Recreation Reserve to take on the red-hot Bombers.
