Hoban was appointed to the role at the club’s annual general meeting, held in December last year, with Robert Allen confirmed as the vice-president.
Hoban has a long-standing affiliation with the Tigers, having been part of the club for almost four decades.
A Tigers premiership player, Hoban was part of Cobram’s flag-winning side in 1984. He had a previous stint as president and has also served as team manager for the seniors and reserves in recent seasons.
Hoban said when the positions became vacant, he and Allen were ready to step up to the plate.
“I’ve been on the committee for many, many years,” Hoban said.
“Robert Allen is a great man and he has been on the committee for several years, so we got our heads together and thought we would take on the president and vice-president role and steer the ship down the right way.”
Hoban takes over the role from outgoing president Pater Beasley, who he praised for his hard work at the club.
“Peter has done an amazing job over the last five years,” Hoban said.
“We are lucky that we have a good platform to launch from in 2023 and he has worked hard to get the club where it is.
“Our junior program is second to none. It is the best for miles and Pete was a real driver of that.”
Cobram was the Murray League’s standout team of the senior football season, powering their way to the minor premiership in dominant fashion.
But the Tigers fell agonisingly short of premiership glory on grand final day after losing to Mulwala by just three points.
Hoban admitted it would be tough for the Tigers to bounce back from last year’s heartbreak, but he said the club would be eyeing another strong campaign
“To be on top all year and to lose the grand final by a kick, it was hard,” he said.
“It is going to take a lot of lifting heads and pats on the back ... it is hard to bounce back.
“I had three meetings over cups of coffee with three players and our conversations were that if we don’t aim for the top four, we are selling ourselves short.
“We have to be aiming for that top-four mark, otherwise I reckon we’ll be letting ourselves down if we don’t.”
On the netball court, Hoban said he was confident things would improve under new coach Robbie Glass.
“I think with the appointment of Robbie, we’ll be looking for a big improvement,” he said.
“We are a pretty proud club, Cobram, and we don’t like being down on the netball things.
“It is an area that we definitely have to have a bit more of a focus on. The club is so much better when it is all rocking and going forward, that will be our big challenge.”
Cobram will kick off the 2023 Murray League season when it takes on Mulwala in round one on Saturday, April 1.
