An enthralling day one of the two-day contest at the Cobram Showgrounds, the visiting Hawks made a total of 130 after 75 overs, with some strong bowling from the Tigers keeping the score low.
Speaking after the first day of the match, Barooga captain Kale Watkins said he was proud of his team for batting for as long as it did.
“Cobram are a well-drilled outfit and it was just a good tough day of cricket,” Watkins said.
“We would’ve liked to score a few more runs but to face 75 overs was a step in the right direction against good opposition.”
Making his way to 54, Watkins was at the forefront of his side’s innings, while coach Brendan Lewis chipped in with 21.
Focussing on growth this season, the Barooga captain said the side was determined to improve on its first innings spell against Tocumwal in round seven.
“It’s a bit cliche but we just want to keep getting better this year,” he said.
“At the start of the season we had some new faces in the team and we’re trying to work with our juniors as well so that continued growth for this year and next year is important.”
Day two of the showdown will continue on Saturday, with Cobram sitting on 0-9.
Meanwhile Katamatite and Tocumwal are locked in an enthralling encounter at Tocumwal.
Batting first, the Tigers made a score of 136 thanks to Brayden Beaton (42) and Benjamin Beaton (31), while a solid performance with the ball has Tocumwal starting on 5-86.
In Nathalia, the home side posted a strong day one score of 249 against Deniliquin.
Boasting a number of contributors with the bat in hand, Nathalia are well and truly in the box seat entering day two.
