On a warm Sunday, the visitors won the toss and elected to bowl.
Strong bowling from captain Christina Roberts, Annika Edis and Kylie Wooden confined the home side, which nonetheless featured respectable shows from Eliza Linehan (11 from 13 balls), Emma Roberts (14 from 27) and Lacy Parsons (9 from 24).
But after a show of classy bowling by Wooden (3-14 off four overs) towards the bottom of the Redback’s batting order, the home side finished its innings 9-63 from its 20 overs.
Abigail Brooker opened the batting at the top of the order for Katamatite, making two from six, but it was Sienna Hutchinson (25 from 30 balls) and Georgia Watson (14 from 28) who stole the show for the visitors.
The end of the final innings saw Katamatite (3-64) trump their hosts (9-63) by seven wickets.
Katamatite captain Christina Roberts said it was a positive result to get on the board at the season’s return.
“We had a good chance, and just everything went our way, I guess,” she said.
“We had a little bit of a collapse at the start of the bating, but I was pretty well confident the game was going to go our way.
“Sienna had a really good run out. She managed to clear the stumps with a throw which is always great to watch.”
With 14 runs, it was also newcomer Georgia Watson’s highest personal score.
“It was great to see her hit double digits,” Roberts said.
“Annika Edis - she’s been out with injury - and she pretty much came back and bowled like she hadn’t missed a beat, which is pretty fantastic as well.
“We have such a good encouraging team, and all we had to do was work together and pick up the game and try our best.”
With a date with first-placed Mooroopna at the coming weekend, Roberts said the game plan remained the same.
“They’re a very strong team,” Roberts said.
“Hopefully, we can use the momentum from this weekend.”
