The memory of last year’s round 12 clash, in which Katamatite clinched victory over Cobram by just two runs, was no doubt on the minds of the home side’s men in white as they took to the field.
A forecast of warm and dry conditions saw Cobram win the toss and elect to open the batting.
It was a special occasion for the visitors, though for another reason. It was the first time two Mynard boys, Oliver, 17, and Cooper, 14, joined their father, Tom, on the pitch of an A-grade game.
At the top of the order, Cobram’s Jimmy Daniel (three from 22 deliveries) and Hugh Hyde (20 from 86) got the hosts off to a steady start, seeing out the first 10 overs without loss.
But things were never going to be easy for the home side, as Katamatite presented a line-up of some of its youngest - and most punishing - bowlers in Archie Daniel, 15, and spinner Kepler Lukies.
It was a day that won’t fade easily in the memory of the young Lukies, who ended up pocketing 3-23 and seven maidens from 18 overs.
James Irvine sent the red ball through the wicket of Jeremy Baden to end Cobram’s first innings.
The home side was all out for 63 in the 45th over.
Coach-captain Lachlan Hyde said the result was both a little surprising and disappointing. But despite the scoreline, the side will be focusing on the positives going into this Saturday’s second day showdown.
“Credit to them, they bowled really well, and I guess we just slipped a bit in pivotal moments,” Hyde said.
“As soon as they got a sniff, they didn’t let go.”
Play soon returned with Katamatite looking to chase down the traget of 64 runs required for first innings points.
Tyler Green and Ben Lucas came in at the top of the visitors’ batting order, with Green making 12 from 73 balls and Lucas out for nought.
At the bottom of the order, Ben Lukies and Benjamin Beaton secured two and five runs not-out by the end of the visitors’ first innings - both having faced 30 deliveries thus-far.
The end of the day’s action saw Cobram on 10-63, trailed by Katamatite with 5-40.
Hyde said that having a consistent plan in place - masterminded by captain Jimmy Daniel - kept his side in the game.
“I think we backed it up in the field as well, taking vital catches and taking important runs,” he said.
“We’re definitely going to work really hard next week.”
Hyde highlighted a few key performances - including by Tyron Baden, Adam Decicco and brother Hugh Hyde.
The message for the team will remain unchanged.
“Not really letting pressure off, don’t give them too many loose balls,” he said.
“Keep that consistency up from last week with the ball, keep applying pressure right from the word go. We don’t have many runs to play with, so we’ll have to be on the attack from the word go.”
