Riley Grant, a student at Cobram Anglican Grammar School, booked himself a spot on the Victorian State Development Team earlier in March.
The 14-year-old centre - who stands at a mean six foot, five inches - said he was excited to have the opportunity to trial, much less get selected.
“I drove away with a smile on my face,” Grant said.
Currently, Grant plays for the Marist Basketball Club in Shepparton, as well as the Bushrangers in Benalla.
He only played his first game of basketball in 2023.
His selection with the state development under-16s team will see Grant take part in multiple training camps across the year, with a jumper in the Victorian state team up for grabs.
It’s a lot of travelling and training, but Grant said he’s loved his basketball ever since he played his first game.
He hopes to work his way up into the professional league and one day play for the Boomers.
“I just think, how cool would it be to come from a little town to play for your country?” he said.
