Bowls rinks across the Goulburn Valley will be silent over the coming week, with the announcement that both the Goulburn Valley Saturday and Midweek Pennant matches are cancelled and will not be replayed.
The unprecedented move from the Goulburn Valley Playing Area sees both the October 22 and 25 matches called off and follows the rescheduling of the last round of Saturday and Midweek Pennant action.
Citing the current flooding event and the potential for further rain as the reason for the cancellation, Goulburn Murray Bowls Region Secretary Stephen McGregor said with an unknown situation ahead it was “common sense” to call the upcoming rounds off.
“I think people have got a lot more to worry about than playing a game of bowls,” McGregor said.
“Next week will be a cancelled round so everyone will get their points, they’ll still be able to put their teams in to use them as qualification for finals.
“A number of clubs have of course had their greens underwater and have had their clubhouse disrupted with water going through it.
“But also the members cannot get to their clubs.”
While the last round of Saturday and Midweek Pennant was postponed to December 17 and 20, the upcoming rounds of action will not be replayed, with the last remaining spare day listed in February set aside in case of extreme heat.
“It (the floods) are horrendous and we’ll try to do what we can to help the clubs,” McGregor said.
“We just don’t know what’s coming.”
Further discussions are set to be held in the coming days to decide whether the next rounds of action will go ahead or not.
