Barooga Football and Netball Club is inviting young women from across the region to join their inaugural Open Women’s and Youth Girls football teams, both of which will compete in the Northern Women’s Football League in season 2024.
Clubs like Strathy, Katty, Blighty, Deni and Barooga have been instrumental in allowing, supporting and encouraging the region’s girls and women to get involved in footy.
The club is reassuring those interested in both netball and football that they can play both, with football training every Wednesday at Barooga Recreation Reserve from 6pm to 7.30pm, while matches are held on a mix of Friday nights and Sundays.
Barooga FNC has secured major sponsors Sporties Barooga and I’ll Cut Your Grass, coupled with experienced head coach Kate “Chappo” Chapman.
Chapman started her footy career in the 80s, running out for the Strathy fourths.
In 2004, Chapman moved to Canberra, where a women’s AFL league was in full force, and over the course of 10 years, she played more than 100 games, rarely finishing outside of the top five league goal-kickers, before moving into coaching.
The Barooga FNC committee said it was fully committed to supporting the growth and success of the women’s teams.
The committee has invested significant resources and time into establishing the new teams, ensuring that players have access to top-notch facilities, equipment and resources to thrive in the league.
