A trip to the shops to get cigarettes has proved costly for one learner driver.
Jean Meltenoven, 48, of Shepparton was charged with being a learner driver without a supervisor and failing to display front and rear L-plates.
His charges were heard in his absence in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Kerrie Thomson told the court police pulled over Meltenoven in Clifton St in Shepparton for a registration check on his vehicle on May 5.
They found he was a learner driver who did not have a supervising driver with him and he was not displaying L-plates.
Meltenoven told police at the time he was driving because he “just went to get cigarettes”, Sen Constable Thomson said.
He also told police he was aware he had to have a supervising driver, but was not aware he needed to display L-plates.
Meltenoven was fined $500, but no conviction was recorded.
