But could a new name — one more inclusive of the region’s varied townships — reinvigorate the region ahead of an expected tourism boom?
‘‘There was a lot of conversation about the perception of the shire during the forum,’’ Finley Chamber president Rick Shaw said.
‘‘There was talk about how locals view it, about how locals perceive outsiders view it, and then of course how outsiders actually view it.
‘‘The proposed name change was suggested as a result of that discussion.’’
Only one potential option was put forward at the meeting — ‘Southern Riverina Shire’.
Berrigan Shire Mayor Matt Hannan suggested residents could have their official say sooner rather than later, and welcomed suggestions from the community.
‘‘At the moment council is exploring a rebrand, and that’s a process that will be put to the community,’’ Cr Hannan said.
Though he stressed the purpose of rebranding council was not to change the name, Cr Hannan did admit a name change ‘‘could very well be part of it’’.
‘‘It (a rebrand) is something that councils do on a recurring basis and is more focused on concept than specifics,’’ he said.
‘‘It could include a new logo, new signage, and different colours.
‘‘But a name change could very well be part of that, if that’s what people want.’’
Berrigan Shire Council was established on March 6, 1906.
It includes the communities of Barooga, Berrigan, Finley and Tocumwal, covering more than 2000 square km.
