Brunskill, a former Tiger, will take over from Josh Noonan and will look to implement his experience on a youthful Cobram outfit having played more than 350 games at senior level.
Fully aware of his capabilities and strengths, Cobram president Peter Beasley is sure Brunskill’s virtues align with the club and is confident he can successfully lead the side forward in 2020.
“John has been around the club as an assistant coach for a few years and he will bring lots of knowledge and enthusiasm with him as well as plenty of new ideas,” he said.
“We are a young side, and he is a great fit for us – he is popular amongst the playing group.
“I am certainly confident he will fulfil the role we have asked him to and leave an imprint on the group.”
After gauging the make up of the squad as assistant for the past few years, Brunskill cannot wait to get behind the wheel and stamp his mark on the league.
“I am very excited for next year, we have a good young group of players,” he said.
Brunskill knows the game inside and out having previously coached Strathmerton during a three year stretch as well as spending six years as an umpire and will look to address pressing matters immediately.
“I think we definitely need a ruckman after losing big Daniel Clarke to Yarroweyah,” he said.
“We have a few good young up and coming ruckmen, but they are probably need a bit more experience.”
After the side fell slightly short of expectations last season, finishing the home and away season in seventh and barrelling out of the finals prematurely, Brunskill will surely look to strengthen the sides backbone throughout the off season and push for a stronger finish in 2020.
“I think we were a bit unlucky this year but as long as we can keep everyone around I think we should certainly making finals again next year.”
