Central Murray Credit Union has been a community-owned, thriving business for its full 50-year life thanks to all those who have been involved.

Chief executive John Pattison said for the past 50 years CMCU had developed many strong relationships with community members and organisations.

He said it had invested heavily within the communities of Yarrawonga, Cobram and Tungamah and surrounding townships and would continue to do so.

CMCU has strongly supported numerous local clubs and individuals with donations of money and advice.

“I would estimate we have donated funds totalling $750,000 over the decades, for clubs or organisations, and individuals,” Mr Pattison said.

He emphasised the close link between the financial institution and the local community, saying it was a much closer one than experienced with bigger banks in town, which have decreased in number and/or introduced reduced opening times.

“Historically we have enjoyed a good working relationship with so many local organisations. We are owned by our members. They support us, we support them,” Mr Pattison said.

Cobram Harness Racing Club and Barooga Cricket Club are two local organisations that have also received a financial boost from CMCU.

As well as sporting clubs and organisations, CMCU has also always been a strong supporter of local education and health.

Mr Pattison said banking had evolved and changed significantly in the past 50 years, particularly over the past decade, with customers utilising more digital services.

“Banking access has been transitioning to digital services, and online banking has been growing for some time and this has also exploded during the pandemic,” he said.

“At CMCU we continue to move with the times and review our business model regularly to address the future needs of members.

“We are also well positioned to provide the updated digital products to ensure that members have total 24/7 access to their banking needs. With Visa card access, online banking and telephone banking, members have easy access to their funds.”
