Roses Only’s Kelly Taggart said after looking at the business’ customers’ buying trends, the sunflower was the standout.
“Sunflowers have been growing in popularity and we think their bright yellow petals and single large heads beam positivity, and that’s something we all need right now,” she said.
“An added bonus is when you receive them, some will be in bud or semi-open, meaning you can watch them open and enjoy their gorgeous faces for longer.”
According to behavioural research conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behaviour in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed, with sunflowers topping the list of those that make us happiest.
Ms Taggart said other flowers expected to prove popular during the year ahead included natives, phalaenopsis orchids for the luxe factor, and reflexed roses which have the petals folded back to show a fuller, more 'bloomed', appearance.
Floral arrangements for special events and occasions are expected to see a more natural and organic theme emerging.
“Asymmetry and arrangements that are a bit wilder in shape, moving away from the old traditional rounded and tight posy bouquets of the past, will lead the way this year,” Ms Taggart said.
“Grouped styling of flowers, rather than having them evenly mixed throughout the bouquet, and statement flowers for that amazing pop of colour will also be very popular.
“We are also seeing an emergence in monochromatic designs, where the foliage is a similar colour tone to the flowers, which is on trend especially for events such as weddings.”
