Final score: Deniliquin Rovers 6.1 (37) lost to Strathmerton 17.14 (116)
The Bulldogs had a commanding 37-point half-time lead, before going on to win the second half 61-19.
Strathmerton coach Shannon Edgar was happy with the result especially considering his sides poor recent record against the Rovers.
‘‘Deni is always hard to beat, especially away, we lost twice to them last year so it is good to get the win,’’ he said.
‘‘We are playing some pretty good footy and we are not changing much.
‘‘I am pleased we shared the goals around but we weren’t as accurate as we would have liked.’’
The Bulldogs have a bye in round 10 before hosting seventh-placed Picola United.
‘‘It is probably a good time for a bye after some wins over tough opposition,’’ Edgar said.
‘‘It gives us a chance to freshen up ahead a couple of tough games against Picola and Katamatite.’’
Katamatite
Katamatite secured its third win in a row with a 56-point win against bottom-place Tocumwal.
Final score: Tocumwal 2.9 (21) Katamatite 11.11 (77)
The Tigers were relatively slow out of the gates, however, the side never looked like being caught when leading by 27 points at the main break.
Though the Tigers were heavily fancied against the Bloods, the significance of the four points was not lost on players, given Katamatite’s injuries.
Katamatite coach Jedd Wright felt is was a strong result considering the side’s injury list and was stoked with the performances of his big men.
‘‘We had 10 senior players out so I am just happy to have got the win,’’ he said.
‘‘The players who came in did really well.
‘‘Callen Aldridge and John Woodcock stood tall for us in the ruck, we needed our leaders to stand up.’’
The Tigers face a completely different test on Saturday, taking on reigning premier Waaia.
‘‘We are looking forward to it,’’ Wright said.
‘‘We go into it with a bit of confidence, we probably won’t get any players back but we aren’t a side who rely on one or two individuals.
‘‘It is a chance to test our depth.’’
Yarroweyah
Yarroweyah sang its song for the first time this Picola District Football League season on Saturday, seeing off Mathoura in a 30-point win.
Final score: Mathoura 7.4 (46) Yarroweyah 12.4 (76)
While it was the Hoppers’ second win of the season, the first came from a post-game league decision after they had initially fallen to Tocumwal in round one, meaning the Mathoura triumph was all the more of a relief.
‘‘It was spot on, it was absolutely awesome,’’ Hoppers coach Andy Jones said.
‘‘The boys were great and played their roles and we finally had a full team on the park. It ended up a really good day.’’
The Hoppers edged the first quarter, but asserted themselves in the second, keeping the Timbercutters scoreless while slotting three goals to earn a 25-point break.
From that strong position, there was no catching them, able to hold on for the five-goal triumph.
‘‘We ended the first half three or four goals up and just held that all through the second half,’’ Jones said.
‘‘Our back six stood out, they didn’t let anything through all day and we got some really good run off the half-back line.
‘‘Shaun Greenway was back through the midfield and just unstoppable and a couple of others really helped him out. Big Timmy Atkins in the ruck, he didn’t lose a tap all day really.’’
Yarroweyah will be looking to go back-to-back at home to Jerilderie this weekend.
‘‘We just want to keep rolling, we’ve got three or four winnable games coming up, so if we can keep rolling through them we hope we can pick up a few more wins,’’ Jones said.
