Storm electricity and gas advice

Hazard: If there are fallen power lines, stay away. Photo by Holly Curtis

Energy Safe Victoria is providing the following advice, as storms and widespread flooding are forecast across Victoria.

Fallen power lines

  • If there are fallen power lines stay more than 10 metres away. Standing near fallen power lines can be fatal.
  • Always treat fallen power lines as live, even when they are broken.
  • Call your electricity supply company to let them know your power is out. For outage details, check their website/app.
  • Storms are the most common cause of power outages, as strong winds often cause trees to fall across power lines, interrupting supply.
  • Always be prepared for power outages with a torch, charged mobile phone and battery-operated radio. If you use electricity to run a water pump, make sure you have an alternative source for fresh water or a non-electric pump available.
  • In the event of a power failure turn off and unplug all electrical appliances at the power point. This will help to prevent equipment damage in the event of a power surge.

Appliances

  • When there is a power cut, make sure gas heating and cooking appliances are turned off (there is a risk of fire if they come back on and there is no-one at the property).
