Shire’s electoral structure set for review

Planning for a review of the electoral structure of the Moira Shire is under way in advance of the 2028 local government elections.

Moira Shire Council’s administrators will work with Victorian Local Government Minister Nick Staikos and any independent advisory panels appointed by the minister to carry out the review next year.

Since 2007, the shire has been an undivided municipality with nine councillors, including a mayor.

Chair Administrator Graeme Emonson said council knew there was a variety of views within the community about the preferred electoral structure for the 2028 council election.

“Council will be working closely with the community to ensure all representation options are fully considered,” Dr Emonson said.

A key aim of the review will be to ensure that voices across the shire are heard and residents are fairly represented in council’s decision-making and planning.

“Any changes to the electoral structure will ultimately be determined by the minister for local government following advice from an advisory panel, in accordance with the Local Government Act.”

The last review of the shire’s electoral structure, in 2019, recommended Moira Shire Council revert to a structure consisting of nine councillors elected from three three-councillor wards.

The recommendation was rejected by the then-local government minister Adam Somyurek.
