Volunteers from the Neighborhood Watch Greater Shepparton and the Lions Club are holding a ‘safe plates day’ with Victoria Police.
It will happen on Saturday, October 28, from 10am to 1pm at the Fairleys IGA car park in North Shepparton.
For just $1 or $2, the volunteers will fit license plates with special ‘unscrewable’ screws.
As the name suggests, these screws cannot be unscrewed by petty thieves.
Victorian police have confirmed that license plate thefts have increased in recent months and have asked everyone to seek out these screws to make their vehicle as secure as possible.
Neighbourhood watch secretary Cindy Hansford said the group had previously raised funds for bikes for Shepparton police officers to help them get around the CBD area more efficiently.
She said the plates day promoted community safety and raised funds to be invested back into the community.
“Just rock up, you’ll see our area in the IGA car park,” Ms Hansford said.
“It takes like five minutes, and you don’t even need to get out of your car.”
