The Yarrawonga Community Action Group (YCAG) invited members of the community to attend the gathering in support of the acquisition of the whole of the former Yarrawonga Primary School site by Moira Shire Council for community use.
“It is important to show council there is a need for the site to be used by many local groups as a community facility for meetings, dance, yoga, art gallery, workshops, seminars, musical recitals, markets, local history museum, landcare activities, just to mention a few,” a YCAG spokesperson said.
“Not to omit much-needed parking for our tourists with caravans and trailers, close to the foreshore. This was extremely important for the future of Yarrawonga.
“It’s not just opportunistic to acquire the entire site and or manage the site to develop as a true community hub, but it’s a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ chance to provide opportunities for future generations.
“It’s arguably the most unique and important site in Yarrawonga for future development because of its strategic location and elevation.
“The Old Yarrawonga Primary School Site is significant to the history of Yarrawonga but moving forward into the future - it links it to the past.”
In April 2020, Moira Shire Council determined to respond to the Department of Treasury and Finance’s First Right of Refusal (FROR) process to try to secure the primary school site on Piper St.
“Advice from DTF is that because of the scale and complexity of the site and other processes required by government policy it expects the FROR process to take some time to complete,” Moira Shire Council chief executive officer at the time Mark Henderson said.
