Shepparton residents will have noticed a lot of extra police over the past two days as Melbourne police converged on the city.
Police from the Public Order Response Team, Transit Police and State Highway Patrol converged on Greater Shepparton on Tuesday, September 12 for Operation Summit, which will run for a few days.
Shepparton police Acting Sergeant Kayla Warwick said the operation focused on road safety and public order in the streets and at public transport spots.
“They are concentrating on the Shepparton and Mooroopna areas because the road toll is so high,” she said.
Sgt Warwick said police would target drivers doing anything wrong on the road.
This includes drink- and drug-driving, unlicensed driving, speeding, using mobile phones when driving, people not wearing seat belts, and unregistered vehicles.
Police will also be highly visible, with patrols at train stations, main bus stops and any hotspots where problems are likely to occur.
Sgt Warwick said responses from the public in a community survey found many people wanted more police visible in problem areas, and this operation was helping address that.
