Historical memorial honouring RAAF hospital

Tocumwal RSL has done much to ensure that historical events remain alive in the memories of the local community, and recently unveiled a new plaque on the memorial site of the former RAAF hospital.
In 1942 the Tocumwal airport was established to provide a secure base for USA Air Force heavy bomber units and as a stores and maintenance base for the US Army Corps during WWII.
In 1947, as the base was no longer required, the hospital, which had been built earlier, became more like a hostel for returned soldiers awaiting housing on soldier settlement blocks in the Yarroweyah and Koonoomoo districts.
The unveiling of the plaque honouring the RAAF hospital and the initiative to utilise the facility for the Soldier Settlement Scheme, took place on the site midway between Tocumwal and Barooga on November 7.
In attendance for the unveiling were Les Christopherson of Tocumwal RSL, Heather Hosie, descendant of soldier settlers Bob and Muriel Hosie, and Peter Sutton and his dad Jim, who ran the Sutton Bros garage and light engineering business, and a fourth generation of the Yarroweyah district.
*Bob Hosie resided at the hostel until his soldier settlement home was ready and went on to become one of the founders and directors of Murray Goulburn.

One of the good guys
Parking my car in Punt Rd last Sunday, a young man knocked on my driver’s side window and said, “Excuse me, did you know you have a flat tyre?”
Surprised to say the least, I jumped out, took one look and sure enough found that indeed I did!
“Would you like me to help you?” he asked.
Never having changed a tyre in more than 55 years of driving, I was quick to respond with a “yes please!” Ten minutes later, the car was on the jack, the spare tyre fitted and the old one in the boot to be checked or replaced the following day.
How lucky can a person be? The young man, Jason Sampson, owner of JLS Automotive in Jerilderie, was the right man at the right time, who just happened to be visiting Cobram that day!
Thank you Jason for your kindness and hopefully good things will come to you through your thoughtfulness.
Lions Junior Art Show winners
The Lions Club of Cobram held their first art show for budding young artists aged 10-14 years last weekend.
The young artists were invited to submit their entry in one of two topics: The Food Trail or Lead with Compassion.
The overall winner was Miller Simpson, 13, who showcased a rare talent to claim the $250 prize with her outstanding depiction of Lead with Compassion, using lead pencil and paints.
The entries were of a high standard and it is hoped that next year, the art show will become a highly sought-after competition for children from local schools keen to put their creative talents to the test.
Other young artists rewarded for their efforts were: Leah Willis, Isabel French, Isabella Spataro, Oscar Betts, Xander Sullivan and Joshua Sullivan.
