While plans for the mural’s content, which artist will paint it, and the exact location are yet to be determined, the group is excited to beautify the area with public art.
Arts for All is supported by Moira Shire Council as the local “arts hub” for Cobram and surrounds.
Arts for All vice president June Wood said the group had previously organised a mural on a Katamatite toilet block and was hoping it would be able to do the same for Cobram.
“(The Katamatite mural) was pretty well received, so we sort of put it out to the committee,” she said.
“What people wanted in Cobram in the line of art, public artwork was pretty much on top.”
The group is planning for the mural to be on the public toilet block in Mivo Park, but is open to other locations, pending logistics and council approval.
Among the most commonly suggested locations is the silos, similar to the murals on the popular silo art trail, but they are not an option in Cobram as they are privately owned.
Ms Wood said the mural was for the community and was likely to bring tourism benefits, as well as beautifying the town.
“It’s for the whole of Cobram, it’s a good project and it’ll brighten the town up ... people will come and see and just get enjoyment out of the actual painting,” she said.
“It’ll bring tourism for a start because people travel to see art, they travel to see these artists and their artworks.”
“There’s no art in Cobram really, you’ve got to start somewhere.”
While the group has not yet selected an artist for the project, Ms Wood said they were hoping to have a well-known and hopefully local person to take on the project.
She also explained Arts for All would be making a submission to the council for a community strengthening grant, as well as applying for all the grants they could to fund the project.
“Our group will definitely have input, bit of community involvement as well ... I’m sure the shire will have input too, it’ll all be set out first sort of thing,” Ms Wood said.
