The Strathmerton post office and cafe is now being run by Cindy Sheehan who operates the Nathalia post office.
She took over the Strathemerton operation to improve services to the town following the former postmaster’s death.
“The current postal service I felt was too small, because it was attached to a residence, and Strathmerton lost their cafe when 3641 closed down. So we just decided it was a good idea to do both.”
The post office has been moved to the old fish and chippy that burned down, which has been renovated into the town’s new post office and cafe.
“We are very grateful and extremely relieved to have a full-time post office operating in Strathy once again,” Strathmerton resident Susan Hann Munro said on Facebook.
Services at the Strathmerton office will be limited until a new licence is approved. However, Ms Sheehan is doing her best to make sure mail is distributed unhindered with the help of locals.
“We’ve employed people from Strathmerton ... because they know the people in the community, when they come in to get their parcels it makes things a lot easier,” Ms Sheehan said.
A Facebook competition was held in January for the Strathmerton community to decide the name of the new post office cafe.
The post received 233 comments, with more than 500 postal-themed suggestions like “The Pony ExpressO”, “Pushing the envelope”, “Postal Cafe”, “Stop and Stamp”, and "Letters and Lattes“.
The winner of the competition, a local named Dave, won the $100 gift card prize for the name “Mail Box Cafe”.
The opening hours of Mail Box Cafe are 7am to 2.30pm Monday to Saturday, with the post office operating from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
