Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell said roads aren’t receiving the maintenance and upgrades they need.
“Every week, many drivers across our region spend hours behind the wheel dodging damaged potholes, reducing speeds on rough surfaces — only to see temporary repairs take place,” Mr Birrell said.
“I know first-hand how terrible some parts of the road network have become, and I hear from locals every day about the need for their local road to be repaired or upgraded.’’
Mr Birrell said roads are critical pieces of infrastructure in Nicholls as an agricultural and transport hub.
Shadow Assistant Infrastructure and Transport Minister Tony Pasin launched the petition this week.
“Australia’s 880,000km of road network underpins almost every aspect of our lives,’’ he said.
‘’From getting to and from work and school to getting produce off the farm and off to market, a good road network underpins the efficient and safe movement of people and goods, and it’s critical to competing in a global market.
“Motorists take responsibility for ensuring their vehicle is roadworthy and pay taxes and charges for the privilege to use our road network.
‘’In turn, a core responsibility of government is to ensure the road network is up to standard.’’
Mr Birrell encouraged residents to submit their views through the survey, available at research.net/r/2HRHBV9
The survey will be open until 5pm, on August 30, 2024.
