Moira Shire Council is embracing renewable energy with the installation of electrical vehicle chargers at Federation Park in Cobram.
The chargers have been operational since Friday, April 14 and can be used to power fully electrical vehicles; however, they are unsuitable for use on hybrid vehicles.
There has been a push in recent years by governments around the world to transition to electric vehicles in order to move to a more renewable future.
However, the infrastructure to support mass use of electrical vehicles in Australia remains underdeveloped.
There is hope that the installation of EV chargers will help draw people with EV vehicles, be they locals or tourists to the Cobram area, as EV chargers remain scarce in regional Australia, especially when compared to the more traditional petrol stations.
A council spokesperson said the EV chargers would hopefully boost the local economy, as the users might visit stores and cafés.
It is for this reason that the EV chargers are located at Federation Park, as council saw it as ideally situated for those who wanted to either enjoy the park itself or walk into the Cobram CBD.
Independant administrator John Tanner has called the installation of the EV chargers an important and exciting step for Cobram.
The EV chargers are also part of council’s desire to help support the transition to a more sustainable future through the use of renewable energy.
