Enter Ryan Medcroft, who is undertaking the Cancer Council’s ‘Longest Day’ challenge with golfing mates Steven Burns, Ryan McDiarmid, Tim Nolan and new challenge participant Raymond Diramacca.
“One of the boys said one day let’s go and do it, all 72 holes in one day. We’re like ‘you’re joking’ ... but we did it,” he said.
“We play golf every other Sunday or every weekend and we’re part of a social golf club ... we’ve been playing anywhere from 20 years to two or three years.”
The Longest Day is designed to test strength, skill and stamina while raising money for the charity’s research and support services.
Individuals or teams can play at any club as they complete their nominated challenge length of 36, 54, or 72 holes of golf.
The group had done the challenge in previous years, but last year’s attempt was spoiled due to COVID-19 and injuries among the group.
Ryan said that while the fundraising is a bonus, their main goal is awareness.
“I suppose everyone’s been touched by cancer in one way or another ... this year we’re sort of trying to raise awareness I think,” he said.
At the time of writing, the team, named the Slominators, has raised $696 out of its $1000 goal.
They’ll be teeing off on December 12 about 5am with light-up golf balls and are expecting to take roughly 14 hours to complete the challenge.
“Hopefully we can get it done in the same sort of time ... we’re going to play both 18 (hole courses) twice and hopefully we can walk at the end,” Ryan said.
“Last time on the last nine holes we had a heap of family and friends come out and follow us too,” he said.
The Cobram-Barooga Golf Club will be hosting them again, which Ryan said has been very accommodating during their past efforts.
“They were really good in the sense that anything we wanted, come and grab it ... they didn't charge us for anything,” Ryan said.
“They’re a really good support.”
