Shepparton police Acting Sergeant Tim Mosely said the 57-year-old Tatura man was driving north on Echuca Rd when his Toyota van left the road and crashed into a tree about 7.25am.
The crash was a low speed one and police believe it is likely it occurred because of a medical episode being suffered by the man.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man was treated by ambulance officers at the scene before being flown by air ambulance to Bendigo Health in a critical condition suffering from a medical episode.
The ambulance helicopter landed on the former Mooroopna High School oval to transfer the man to hospital.
