Police were called to a south Shepparton address about 10.30pm.
Acting Sergeant Bridie Sutton said a man and a woman had a domestic dispute that escalated into violence.
Police were called by a housemate.
On arrival, Sgt Sutton said police forced open a locked bedroom door after hearing cries for help from the woman.
She said police found the man “on top of her, strangling her”, physically abusing the woman.
The man then resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer, Sgt Sutton said.
The woman was taken to hospital with serious face injuries.
Sgt Sutton said the woman was still in hospital as of noon on Thursday, May 9, and that the man and the woman had been in a de facto relationship.
A 35-year-old Shepparton man has been charged with intent to recklessly cause injury, common law assault, aggravated assault of an officer and resistance to police.
He has been remanded in custody to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court next month.
Police said investigations were ongoing.
