Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley recently visited the ageing facility on Deniliquin St.
She said the funding would enable works to repair deterioration of the internal walls, including re-plastering, as well as a renewal to the external cladding
“The hall is not only used by the local RSL sub-branch for its activities, it’s also a meeting and activity base for a range of other community groups. In restoring the building, I hope it can remain the wonderful community hub it has been for many more years to come,” Ms Ley said.
The RSL and Tocumwal Rotary Club have also agreed to make major financial contributions to the project, in a move to show the importance of the facility to the Tocumwal community.
According to Tocumwal Rotary Club spokesperson Kerry Davies, the hall was built and originally used by US Air Force and RAAF personnel as an officers’ mess during World War II.
It also served as a meeting room for the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force, which managed operations at the nearby airfield.
“This building has a truly symbolic and historic significance to our town, with an ongoing connection to our veterans and local residents. It would be wonderful to see the hall receive this much-needed makeover,” Ms Davies said.
