Katamatite Primary School’s Fletcher Davies took out the competition with Cobram Anglican Grammar School student Joseph Whelan-Brain runner-up.
In the Year 5 and 6 age group, speakers had to deliver a four-minute speech on their favourite book, followed by an impromptu speech answering ‘If you could share a meal with anyone, dead or alive, who would you choose?’
Katunga Primary School’s Rhani Hendy was the age group winner, ahead of Sacred Heart Primary School’s Dimity Connell finishing second.
Lions Club zone public speaking chair Doug Rankin was impressed with all the speakers and commended them for their efforts.
‘‘I was incredibly impressed with the excellent presentations,’’ he said.
‘‘The standout thing for me was how confident the presenters were — they were all well prepared and not one needed prompting.
‘There were around 100 people in attendance, so it was fantastic to see how confident they were, especially considering they did not have a lectern or a microphone because this is competition is about learning how to project your voice.’’
The winners and runners-up were presented with a framed certificate as well as a $50 and $30 student gift card respectively.
The zone winner in each age group progress to the district stage in Tongala on Sunday.
