The program, run by Moira Shire Council in partnership with Barooga Aquatic and Recreation Centre, ran for a week, from January 16-20.
About 30 kids between the ages of five and nine took part in the program.
For the first three days, the program took place at Cobram pool but luckily the conditions allowed for the last two days to be held at Thompsons Beach.
Students learnt swimming techniques, how to use paddle boards, perform rescues and put on lifejackets.
They also learnt about water safety and how currents work along the Murray River, as well as what to do if in trouble.
Olivia Pendlebury, 5, said the program was fun and was adamant about her favourite part.
“Going on the boards,” she said.
The program has been praised by parents of attendees.
Jessica Stanyer was one of the parents who looked on as her son, Ashton Stanyer, 7, took part.
She believes the program is crucial, considering the close proximity of the Murray River, and given many children frequent the river.
“I think it’s pretty good that Moira Shire and Berrigan are working together to provide a water safety program ... it’s good to teach kids to navigate around the river and water safety,” Mrs Stanyer said.
This praise for the program was echoed by Barooga Aquatic and Recreation Centre co-ordinator Tim Dooling who said it taught children vital life skills.
“It is an engaging program that keeps things fun but educational about what to do in an emergency whilst teaching the kids about the danger of water and what to do in an emergency.”
Mr Dooling said feedback from parents had been overwhelmingly positive.
As for future programs, Mr Dooling said there were plans for the program to be extended into the future.
“Plans for the Cobram Bush Nippers is to be a yearly event. We are looking at if this program could also be held in the Easter holidays.”
