Grants open for local disability groups

Nationals Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe is calling upon district disability support groups to consider applying for the Disability Self-Help Grants Program 2023-2025.

Ms O’Keeffe said the grant was an excellent opportunity for local networks across the Shepparton district to create meaningful and enriching experiences for their members.

The primary goal is to alleviate the social isolation experienced by individuals living with disabilities and their caregivers, a concern particularly pertinent in regional and rural Victoria.

The Disability Self-Help Grants Program boasts broad criteria, ensuring that applicants have access to funding tailored to their support group’s unique needs.

This could range from acquiring digital equipment to facilitate virtual access to organised meetings and covering the costs of catering at gatherings, to securing a guest speaker for a local event.

“The Disability Self-Help Grants Program can also be used to hire support workers and interpreters to deliver successful and inclusive peer support activities for the participants and their carers,” Ms O’Keeffe said.

“It is so important of having appropriate and inclusive access to support networks in our local communities, especially for those that foster participation within their communities.

“Social connection improves health outcomes, which is good for both the individual and also the community.”
