A vehicle hit a tree on Bourchiers Rd, near Old Coach Rd, according to police.
Local officers, including those from Cobram and Nathalia, were alerted just after 1pm by a resident who saw smoke near the crash.
CFA, SES, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police officers attended the incident; however, the vehicle’s driver, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.
As part of their role, firefighters had to put out a grass fire at the scene.
Police believe the crash happened between 10.30am and 11am on Tuesday and are appealing for witnesses.

The death is the 35th on the region’s roads since New Year’s Eve in 27 fatal crashes.
