Cobram’s Country Women’s Association joined Moira Shire to host the event, which featured a screening of The Colour Purple and an afternoon tea complete with scones and jam.
CWA's President Fiona Hackett said she was overwhelmed by the community's participation.
“We had to open up a second theatre to cope with the overflow and spread people out,” Ms Hackett said.
"There were a few men in the audience, which was good to see...It was a really good response from the community."
The Color Purple is a musical coming-of-age film with the theme of empowering women in the face of domestic violence.
“The film’s message runs parallel with the International Women's Day’s message about empowering women,” she said.
Most attendees hung around after the screening to enjoy the afternoon tea.
CWA members made the scones, and Ms Hackett said their teamwork symbolised what people striving for the same goal could achieve.
There was also a raffle with multiple prizes.
Ms Hackett said the event wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of various community stakeholders.
“We thank the council for their generous donations, the Big Strawberry for donating the jam and the cinema for giving us a discounted rate,” she said.
“We had a fantastic day."
Ms Sheed said that International Women’s Day is important for everyone.
“International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate, reflect, and think about what this day means to all of us”, Ms Sheed said.
“Within our region, we have women excelling in all sorts of ways and participating in our community.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s collectively inspire inclusion and forge a more equal and fairer world for women and girls everywhere."
Moira Shire Council is also supporting the CWA’s Nathalia Nightwatch free Chatter with Pizza and Tunes event, which will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 5.30pm.
