Greater Shepparton City Council says it is yet to decide whether it will launch a whole new tender process for its waste and recycling contracts or review the one whose findings it has rejected.
At a special meeting on Tuesday, April 11, to specifically decide on huge waste and recycling contracts said to be worth more than $75 million over 15 years, council rejected a recommendation that included ASX-listed company Cleanaway being awarded the kerbside bin collection, handling and disposal portion of the contracts.
That recommendation followed a regional collaborative tender process known as the ‘Resource Recovery Collective – Hume’ for waste and recycling services involving 10 councils and two alpine resorts.
In a decision that required Mayor Shane Sali to cast the deciding vote, council decided to undertake a new process over an undetermined time period with chief executive Peter Harriott to report on what that process will be.
Speaking after council’s most recent meeting on April 18, Cr Sali said a way forward was yet to be finalised.
“Once we have all that information in front of us, then as a group of councillors, we can effectively determine whether we do want to undertake that process or look at another option,” he said.
“So I guess until it’s all on the table, we don’t really know what the options are.”
The current waste collection contracts expire in October.
