Costa Georgiadis, the charismatic host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, is set to lead a special event at Tahbilk Winery’s Peppercorn Paddock near Nagambie.

Dubbed ‘Costa's Climate Ready Gardens: Thriving Through Change’, the gathering will take place on Friday, November 15 at 10am, offering local green thumbs a chance to pick up practical tips for nurturing flourishing backyards in the face of changing climate conditions.

The day’s program promises a rich blend of experiences, including insights from Taungurung elder Uncle Shane Monk, a morning tea inspired by native ingredients, and an eco-cruise tour of Tahbilk’s wetlands.

Costa shared his excitement about spotlighting gardeners’ vital role in safeguarding the environment.

“Gardeners are both stewards and guardians of our environment and can make a real difference in the fight against climate change,” he said.

“There is no doubt that climate change is real and can have a significant impact on backyard habitats.

“There are so many ways we can build back better and connect our families and community to nature.

“This is a great chance for people to learn about planning strategies and ideas that can be applied in your home garden or green space to make a positive and sustainable transformation.”

Attendees can expect to delve into a range of topics, from site assessment and plant selection to water planning, soil building, waste separation and composting, home-grown vegetables and fostering biodiversity.

Costa will also explore repurposing materials and fresh approaches to gardening.

Strathbogie Shire Council administrator Peter Stephenson praised the initiative, saying council was incredibly pleased to be able to bring this event to the local community and help build a more resilient environment, support the recovery from recent floods and foster a sustainable future

“This is a great initiative that aligns with council’s flood recovery support and Climate Action Plan,” he said.

“This will help people learn new techniques and deepen their connection with the environment as they discover simple ways that they can make a positive impact on the environment through their home garden.”

The event has been made possible through support from Strathbogie Shire Council and The Community Recovery Hub, with joint funding from the Australian and Victorian Governments through Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
