Moira Shire Council community services officer Danni Whinray said the aim of the event was to open up a critical dialogue around family and gender-based violence.
“Being able to have those conversations is really important,” Ms Whinray said.
“People keep talking, having a conversation about it, being aware of the statistics, and being aware of how rampant it is.
“And that’s where it starts, I think — with a conversation.”
Several guests spoke at the event, including Moira Shire Council Administrator Graeme Emonson, Senior Sergeant Nathan Ractliffe on behalf of Victoria Police, Rachel Williams from Marian Community and Karen Bruce of Soroptimist International.
After the final speech, the assembled crowd marched around the periphery of Federation Park in an act of solidarity as part of 16 Days of Activism to support those affected by gender-based violence.
A number of service providers held informative stalls on the day, including Vincent Care, FamilyCare and The Orange Door.
The annual event was organised by council in partnership with Soroptomist International and Respect Victoria.
“We could always do with more people here, but if we help one person, that’s a start,” Ms Whinray said after the event.
“But it’s so important to keep the conversation going and keep talking about it.”
