Members of Cobram and District Spinners and Weavers cut the cake and reminisced on decades of fun and friendship on Tuesday, July 25.
Founder Irene Overeen is still very much involved and was keen to celebrate nearly half a century of success for a club formed after a discussion over morning tea in 1978.
The Spinners and Weavers is a social club for like minded people - but it does a lot more than simply provide a space to knit.
Heather Hosie is a current member, one of 23, and she said the camaraderie is what makes it a special thing to be a part of.
“We’ve got quite a few long term members left,” Ms Hosie said
"We meet every week and we have a workshop once a month.“
At those workshops members do a variety of things.
“We knit, we felt, we weave and we crochet,” she said.
“At the last workshop we made silk paper. At the previous one we made crocheted beanies.”
Highlighting the selfless, and community minded, ethos behind the club Ms Hosie said those beanies were created specifically to be distributed to homeless people in the area.
"We make them, then we donate them to local charities such as Family Care,“ she said.
“They know who needs them most.”
This month the group had been focussed on arranging its 45th birthday.
“On Tuesday, July 25 we had a great celebration,” Ms Hosie said.
“We had competitions, a fashion parade, and a display of our work over the last 45 years.
“And we had a number of visitors come along from other similar groups (across the north east).“
The group is now looking forward to its half century celebration in 2028, and is on the lookout for new members.
“We meet every Tuesday at the Yarroweyah Hall between 10am and 3pm, we bring lunch and cup of tea is provided,” Ms Hosie said.
“Anyone who wants to learn is quite welcome to come and join us at any stage.”
