A table tennis competition is launching on July 28, with locals encouraged to throw their hat in the ring for a shot at glory.
Getting it up and running has taken a while for organiser Adam Gatcum, who hopes it will be a place for healthy competition with an added social element.
“I have wanted to get a competition at the stadium off the ground for quite some time,” he said.
“It is something that opens up opportunity for a wide range of people, from the elderly to youngsters, especially because it is not a hugely physical sport.
“People have been locked up for so long and this is a good way to get them back socialising. It is also a good sport to practice social distancing measures.”
With a host of sport across the Moira Shire cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic, Gatcum said the competition would be a great way to engage with a wide demographic.
“It will of course be a competition with fixtures, but there will be a more social aspect to it as well,” he said.
“We have had about seven or eight people sign up already. They are all from completely different backgrounds.
“This will be a good chance to meet people that you usually wouldn’t socialise with.”
Set to be held on Tuesdays from 6 pm to 7 pm at Cobram Sports Stadium, the competition runs weekly, costing $10 a person.
With three tables ready for action at the stadium and another on the way, Gatcum invited everybody to sign up.
“It will be subject to interest, depending on how many players register will determine the length of the competition.”
