The upgrades have been made with hopes the course will stay a competitive destination course and maintain its water security.
The upgrades consist of dam expansions and improvements, a new fully automatic irrigation system and two new holes, on top of the new Sporties “Bunker” attraction.
It is estimated the upgrades will create a five per cent growth in golf tourism, bring in an additional $200,000 per annum visitor spend and facilitate more major events.
The Bunker attraction was switched on for the first time on Friday, November 12, in time for a visit from local Federal MP Sussan Ley and St Joseph’s Primary Cobram students.
It has four virtual sport simulators, partially funded by $600,000 from the Commonwealth Government and will open officially in early December.
“This round of Building Better Regions specifically looked at the impact the pandemic was having on communities,” Ms Ley said.
“There’s no better example of that type of thinking here at Sporties and the golf club; they already have a superb course and hospitality facilities but are super keen to become the region’s major drawcard for both local residents and visitors.”
The golf course is already rated in Australia’s top 100 courses and is a “nationally significant course”, according to Golf Australia.
Under round five of the Building Better Regions Fund, the government committed nearly $300 million to 295 projects across regional Australia.
