Dennis and Elsie Caughey were married in 1960 at the Methodist church in Numurkah, and will reach their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday, December 3.
Mr Caughey's parents owned the Strathmerton newsagency and Mrs Caughey worked in the general store.
Mr and Mrs Mr Caughey met when Mrs Caughey would buy the newspaper on her way home at lunch time.
“We both played badminton together on the same team,” Mr Caughey said.
“What originally brought us together was the bachelors and spinsters balls, where the men had to invite a lady,” Mr Caughey said.
“One of Elsie's friends said, `why don't you ask Elsie Munro?’, and you had to write a proper invitation.”
Mr Caughey said from there, the two of them went dancing together wherever there was a ball.
“When Elsie announced to her dad she set the wedding date for the third of December, he has said, `that's harvest time’," Mr Caughey said.
“On the day of the wedding there was a thunderstorm and it rained, so he couldn't harvest anyway.”
Mr and Mrs Caughey honeymooned in Benalla when motels were just beginning to come in. They then travelled to Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Melbourne and Ballarat.
The couple has three children and five grandchildren.
Mr Caughey said his 60 years of marriage has been "absolutely amazing".“We've had a wonderful 60 years together,” he said.
The couple will have a lunch in Strathmerton to celebrate the anniversary.
