Having been a volunteer for the rural fire service for in excess of 40 years, I was very disappointed to read your story in Tuesday’s paper claiming we are on strike due to dissatisfaction with the current management.
To the contrary, I believe we have the best management team we have ever had that ensure we are possibly among the best equipped rural brigades in NSW.
It is a fact that member turnout at incidents is dwindling but the reasons for this are:
1. Population is dwindling and age is increasing in rural communities;
2. Our phone service is substandard meaning sometimes our members don’t receive the callout;
3. Good staff are very hard to come by so most farmers are extremely busy.
In closing I feel the community can be very confident that the majority of local volunteer firefighters do support management, and are ready to assist at any incidents when required provided they can fit it in with their own operation.
