Recently the school, alongside staff member Marika Newey, were named as finalists in the Victorian Education Excellence Awards in the fields of Outstanding School Improvement and Outstanding Primary Teacher.
With Cobram Primary School nominated for the gong a second year running, principal Matt Knight spoke on the pleasure he took from the recognition.
“It was a great honour last year and to have it happen again is more of a pat on the back. It shows that it was not a fluke and that we’ve been able to continue that improvement, which is great,” he said.
“This is a culmination of five or six years of really hard work by our staff. We’ve done a lot of work around our teaching and learning to know what it looks like to have engaged, enthused, and happy kids in the classroom.
“As an outcome our student outcomes data has gone through the roof and our kids are achieving outstanding results, which I think is where the recognition comes from.
“There has been plenty of ups and downs throughout this year, but this has definitely been an up.”
Individually, one member of the staff at Cobram Primary School who continually contributes to the success of the school as a whole is numeracy leader Marika Newey.
Mr Knight said her nomination was a testament to the body of work she had carried out since becoming a part of the Cobram Primary team.
“We are super-proud of Marika, she is a really hard worker and she typifies what it means to be a staff member at Cobram Primary School,” he said.
“A lot of the work that she does goes unseen, but the outcomes that we’ve achieved in numeracy certainly don’t go unnoticed.
“This is a really good pat on the back for all the work that she’s done over the last four or five years to get our kids working in numeracy the way that they are.”
Winners of each category will have access to professional development grants of up to $25,000 to support their work in schools.
