Council keen for dog owners to ensure they do not escape

Wandering dogs: Moira Shire Mayor Libro Mustica is asking the community to ensure their dogs cannot escape.

Moira Shire Council is asking dog owners to check their pets are adequately confined to their property following a series of wandering dog complaints.

Mayor Libro Mustica said since the beginning of 2022, council had impounded 76 wandering dogs.

“Most worryingly, seven of these impounded dogs were alleged to have been involved in dog attacks,” Cr Mustica said.

“Dog owners are responsible for providing adequate confinement of their dogs which could include secure escape-proof fencing, safe visitor access to the front door, and securely shut gates.”

Cr Mustica said one way to ensure a timely return of your animal in the unfortunate instance where it might escape was to make sure it was registered with council.

“It is required under state legislation to register you dog or cat with council, and there are many benefits in doing this,” he said.

“When you register your pet you are given an identification tag to put on its collar; the tag number will identify your pet to council if your pet is found wandering thereby resulting in a quicker return home.

“Residents are encouraged to report any wandering dog to council by calling our Customer Experience team on 5871 9222, or if it is safe to do so, secure any wandering or inadequately confined dogs and then contacting us“
