Originally raising concerns about students being exposed to the elements through the Deniliquin Pastoral Times in June this year, Mr Rogan said this week’s rain has again demonstrated the need for a shelter to be built at the corner of Crispe and Henry St.
It is one of two Deniliquin bus stops used by children attending Moama and Echuca schools, with the other in Whitelock St.
Now just an empty block since the demolition of the East End Store, Mr Rogan and other parents have reportedly approached Edward River Council several times over a number of years to have shelter provided in Crispe St.
In their last attempt, in May this year, 12 parents and 10 students signed a petition which was delivered to council.
At the time, council said the request for a bus stop was considered in the budget process. Funding was never allocated.
After using the Pastoral Times as a vehicle to raise awareness of the issue, Transport for NSW advised that councils could apply for shelter funding through the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme.
Council has since advised Mr Rogan it has applied for funding, but was yet to hear if the application was successful.
“Edward River Council acknowledges the grant application for the bus shelter has been carefully developed and submitted within the timeframe,” council wrote to Mr Rogan.
“As is often the case with grant applications of this nature, there isn’t a set period in which we will be notified of the outcome.”
“Generally, it can take between three to six months before we receive any correspondence.
“Please be assured that once we receive any updates, we will promptly share them with you.”
“We understand that waiting for these outcomes can be challenging, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this period.”
Mr Rogan said he has submitted a formal public access application to receive a copy of the submission sent by council.
He has also made another formal request for a shelter to be provided, and continues to keep the issue on the agenda by speaking with councillors and council representatives.
